Park County Flu Clinics Fall 2026
2026–2027 Respiratory Virus Season: Flu Overview
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A and B viruses. Flu A is more common and tends to be more severe, while Flu B is more likely to affect children under 5. Flu spreads easily through droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking, and people are typically most contagious during the first three days of illness.
Who’s Most at Risk?
Older adults face significantly higher risks of severe flu complications. These may include pneumonia, sepsis, worsening of chronic conditions (such as diabetes or heart failure), and a sharply increased risk of heart attack or stroke shortly after flu infection. In Colorado during the 2025–2026 season, adults aged 75+ had the highest flu‑related hospitalizations.
Vaccination Matters
Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone eligible. All U.S. flu vaccines are trivalent and protect against three circulating influenza strains. Adults 65+ are encouraged to receive the high‑dose version, which helps generate a stronger immune response. In the last season, 52.6% of Colorado adults 65+ were vaccinated—42.5% in Park County.
Who Shouldn’t Get a Flu Shot?
People with a history of severe reactions to a previous flu shot or to specific vaccine ingredients (not including eggs) should avoid vaccination, as well as infants younger than 6 months.
Where You Can Get Vaccinated
Park County Public Health offers flu clinics, private appointments, doses for insured, uninsured or underinsured adults, and limited home visits. Vaccines are also available at pharmacies and primary care providers.
Tips to Avoid the Flu
Stay home when sick, practice good hand hygiene, limit exposure to ill individuals, clean high‑touch surfaces, and get vaccinated—ideally in October to ensure protection throughout the season.
